Steamtown is a unique National Park / Historic Site, it is a collection of railroad steam engines, many in working order.

The park includes a renovated / rebuilt roundhouse and turntable, a large machine shop where they can rebuild the engines, as well as descriptive exhibits. I particularly was looking forward to my visit as for the first decade and then some of my life, I rode on trains driven by steam engines.

Unfortunately, the park was holding staff meetings the particular day I was there so there were no rangers (or volunteers) to conduct tours of the machine shop and a couple of other areas which were only open for conducted tours. But most of the park was open to allow visitors to just wander around on their own, a fascinating glimpse of history.

I found this fit in with my touring of the Erie Canal, as it was the (steam) railroads which replaced the canal as the major shipping means in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The site also includes a trolley museum, not part of the National Park. That was a disappointment, no working exhibits when I was there, other than a few old trolleys, some in good condition, some decrepit, the rest of the building was a collection of poorly identified mass transit "junk" obviously removed from service and dumped there. There was little description of how it functioned and where it might have been installed.

I found this disappointing as Scranton is still known as the Electric City because it was the first place in the nation to have electrically powered trolleys.
