When the Erie Canal was built in the early 1800s, it ran through the center of modern-day Syracuse. By 1915, when the canal was being rebuilt, it was rerouted to the outskirts of the city, freeing valuable land for real estate development.

The weighlock was a section of the canal where each vessel was weighed to determine the tariff which should be paid, based on its weight.

The building in Syracuse that housed the weighlock and associated offices was put to other uses, and eventually became a museum exhibiting the history of the canal.
