Locks 32 and 33 were built as a part of the rerouting, enlarging and electrifying of the Erie Canal in 1915. The canal route was moved from the center of Rochester to the southern outskirts. Lock 32 is in Pittsford, lock 33 is about a mile west in Henrietta.
Just west of Lock 32 is the barge Basin where canal vessels could pull off the canal route to unload cargo and passengers or wait for more shipments. The canal equivalent of today's highway rest stops. Now it is primarily a fishing hole and photogenic nature preserve..
Many people today are unaware that the Erie Canal played a major role in opening the Midwest to settlement and providing a trade route back to the east, As part of the settlement of the American Revolution, the territory west of the original 13 colonies and east of the Mississippi more than doubled the size of the United States. Then in 1803, the Louisiana Purchase doubled it again,
Much of this western territory was well suited to farming, but the Appalachian Mountains blocked access. The Erie Canal opened an inexpensive, faster path to the territories, providing less expensive grains to the growing East Coast cities.
