Today I'm visiting Lockport, NY and Erie Canal locks 34 & 35
When the Erie Canal was built in the early 1800s, the terrain here, the Niagara Escarpment, presented a major challenge. The builders had to design a set of locks to accommodate the 60 foot lift in the canal. The original 5 combined locks here were bypassed by a pair of much taller locks when the canal was electrified in 1915. The original GE DC motors and controls are still in service 107 years later.
The Town and City of Lockport grew to support the Erie Canal and the many workers it attracted.
