I spent a day exploring Letchworth State Park, often called "The Grand Canyon of the East". The park is gigantic, 14, 427 acres. It is is roughly 17 miles long, following the course of the Genesee River as it flows north through a deep gorge and over three large waterfalls in western New York.
While there is far more water flowing over Niagara Falls, the total drop of the three main Letchworth falls is greater than Niagara. The highest waterfall in New York, In Letchworth Park, Inspiration Falls, is almost twice as high as Niagara. However it is on a small tributary and has only a small, seasonal flow.
The Genesee Gorge in Lecthworth is almost 600 feet deep, compared to the 188 foot (above river level) maximum depth of the Niagara Gorge..
There are about 60 miles of trails in Letchworth. I hiked something like 10 miles there, including down the more than 200 steps to the lower falls overlook, and then back up.
If you are traveling through western New York, you really should spend at least a day touring Letchworth. You won't be disappointed.
